Quénia Nyeri Hill Estate AB | Origem Única
A century of coffee at the foot of Mount Kenya
Nyeri Hill Estate lies about 2 km northwest of the town of Nyeri, in the heart of Kenya's historic coffee country. To the northeast rises snow-capped Mount Kenya, the second-highest mountain in Africa. To the west stands Nyeri Hill, which gives the farm its name, and to the northwest are the Aberdare ranges, rich in wildlife and native plants. The Chania and Muringato rivers run through the property, between valleys of natural vegetation.
This is one of the oldest coffee plantations in East Africa. The land belongs to the Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri, and coffee was first planted here in 1914. The wet mill, built in 1934 and used by the Consolata missionaries to process coffee for export to Italy, still works today. Over the last century, income from the farm's coffee has helped found around fifteen institutions, including schools, seminaries and a hospital.
The estate covers about 1,415 hectares, of which roughly 344 are planted with coffee. Native and exotic trees have been planted among the coffee, and native grasses protect areas at risk of erosion, as part of the farm's commitment to biodiversity and to caring for the land.
The process: Kenyan washed
This lot combines four varieties typical of Kenya: SL28, SL34, Batian and Ruiru 11, grown between 1,800 and 2,200 metres and harvested between November and January. "AB" refers to the Kenyan bean size grade. The cherries are picked at peak ripeness and taken to the estate's wet mill, where they are pulped immediately and dry fermented to remove the mucilage. The coffee is then washed with clean water, graded and dried on raised beds.
In the cup
Nyeri Hill is classic, vibrant Kenya. Fresh passion fruit and dried lime bring a juicy, lively acidity, balanced by the deep sweetness of panela and a distinctive cola note. Hints of dark chocolate and caramel round out a syrupy cup with a smooth, creamy texture.
How to brew it
We recommend the V60 to showcase its bright acidity and juicy fruit. A good starting point is 15 g of coffee to 250 g of water at about 93 °C, with a medium-fine grind and a total brew time of around 3 minutes.
